Our technologies and solutions

bio-cage

sludge dewatering
bio-cageTM  is a simple and low cost solution for increasing sludge solids content, significantly reducing transport costs

bio-cageTM is a low cost and virtually maintenance free physical sludge dewatering device that requires no chemicals or power.

Developed by EcoGenR8 to address the huge costs faced by water utilities when transporting liquid sludges from remote wastewater treatment sites to sludge treatment centres, bio-cageTM is a truly innovative and effective solution.

Reducing the costs associated with sludge transportation is an ongoing challenge for water utilities and a key target to reduce both operational costs and carbon footprint. Wastewater sludges typically have a low sludge content and the goal is to increase this content as much as possible within tight cost constraints to minimise the wasteful transportation of water rather than sludge.

Bio-cageTM is the perfect solution. Designed, manufactured and installed by our in-house team, bio-cageTM is easily retrofitted into existing sludge holding tanks. Requiring no power or chemicals and with minimal maintenance requirements, bio-cageTM really does offer a cost effective and viable solution that will deliver significant operational savings for water utilities.

Installed and performance verified on over 50 wastewater sites across the Southern Water region, bio-cageTM generates an average 33% increase in dry solids with an associated reduction in transport costs. The average payback of the technology is between 12 and 24 months and it is effective on a range of sludge makes.

“AFECO’s development and delivery of bio-cageTM across Southern Water is an ideal example of an effective optimisation initiative – it is both innovative and robust and is delivering quantifiable and proven benefits to the business. This initiative demonstrated the high standards and engineering capability of AFECO.”

Heat to power

electricity generation from waste heat
Our waste heat solution will convert even low grade heat – whether liquid, steam or gas – into green electricity.

Waste heat is an unavoidable by product of many industrial processes with re-use for low grade heat not always being viable.

We have developed what we believe is the most effective solution on the market for maximizing the value of this waste heat – using it to generate electricity.

By taking existing processes that generate heat as a by-product, such as combine heat and power (CHP) plants, steam boilers, hot water systems, exhaust stacks and flares, and analysing the thermal balance, we can match these heat sources with the optimal technology to convert it into green electricity. Our technology solutions are robust and proven, with multiple installations worldwide and demonstrable track record. Even at temperatures as low as 80°C, we can generate electricity in a robust and cost effective way.

Whether for use on site or for export to the national grid, the electricity generated from waste heat can provide a valuable alternative to grid-based energy, reducing both costs and carbon footprint.

At EcoGenR8 we are able to offer a range of project options, from conventional design and build to a fully funded model in which we pay all capital and operational expenditure in exchange for a long term power purchase agreement (PPA) for the sale of the electricity generated which can be purchased by the client at a discounted rate.

Pasteurisation

thermal treatment of biosolids
Our pasteurisation process is energy optimised and designed specifically to thermally treat biowastes and biosolids

Pasteurisation is a thermal process which reduces or eliminates the presence of pathogens to produce a treated bioresource product that is compliant with the stringent requirements of the water industry.

Our proprietary design is based on direct experience of commissioning, operating and optimising pasteurisation performance; therefore we are confident that we offer the best available pasteurisation solutions to the organic waste treatment market.

Applied upstream of anaerobic digestion facilities, our pasteurisation system is a highly energy efficient process suitable for meeting the highest regulatory standards for sewage sludge, biowaste, or co-digested wastes. In addition, the pasteurised sludge enables the throughput of existing digesters to be increased, boosting biogas production and increasing the revenues generated by that biogas.

We are confident that we offer the most energy efficient solution on the market – heat is recycled at every stage of the process, thereby minimising external heat inputs – crucial for all energy generating plants. Our process provides the optimum solution to balancing cost, energy efficiency and digester performance with the need to comply with the Animal By-Product Regulations (APBR) for biowaste, or to produce an enhanced treated product in accordance with the Safe Sludge Matrix.

Fats, oils and grease

FOG reception and handling to boost biogas
Our package FOG system will enable you to efficiently boost the biogas production from anaerobic digesters.

Fats, oils and greases (FOGs) are widely recognised as having the potential to significantly increase the biogas produced by anaerobic digesters yet are by nature inherently difficult to handle and process.

Our solution is build on years of experience in the treatment of FOGs on sludge treatment centres and using a range of FOG grades and qualities to boost biogas production.

At EcoGenR8 we have developed a proprietary FOG system that overcomes the difficulties presented by the use of FOGs to boost biogas production. Our skid mounted system has been designed to receive a range of FOGs, process them and feed them into your existing anaerobic digestion plant at a controlled rate, ensuring the FOGs remain in solution.

Our design has been developed in house, collaborating the first hand operational experience and technical expertise of engineers and scientists, including industry recognised field leaders. We are able to advise on feed rates and performance targets to ensure your digesters are not overloaded.
